Bok Tower Gardens, Lake Wales, FL........Thursday 17th March 2016

Life throws up some odd things, our visit to Bok Tower Gardens was on the recommendation of an Australian member of staff at Walmart here in Sebastian !!  Must pop back in and say thanks as we had a great visit...
It's a 70 mile easy drive to Lake Wales and the gardens and well worth it...
Very "Exbury" as mostly azaleas which are now starting to fade but still plenty of colour and very attractive....
The main attraction at the gardens is the Carillon Tower....commissioned & built in the late1920's by Edward Bok as the "centre piece" for his woodland setting garden....

Edward Bok is buried in the grassy area between the door and the moat....
The Great Brass Door depicting The Book of Genesis......
The Bok Carillon Tower has 60 bells ranging in weight from 16 pounds to nearly 12 tons designed and built in 1928 by John Bellfoundry Ltd of Loughborough, England...I checked on the company and very pleased to say they are still making bells....
The bells do not move but are fixed in a frame arranged in a chromatic series played from a keyboard permitting control of expression through variation of touch !
Daily "concerts" at 1 and 3pm last for approx 45 minutes...
The tranquil/peaceful music can be heard throughout the gardens with plenty of shady areas to sit, listen and contemplate....
At the top of the 205ft tower are 8 marble heron statues...

And another peaceful place for our lunchtime sandwich....
And now for something completely different !!!
Spook Hill.....we had heard about the optical illusion....ummm.....rather a tad of artistic licence me thinks but no worries it was just down the road from the gardens and on route to the town of Lake Wales...
This and next 3 pics of old town Lake Wales...

A good day out, a long drive but easy road, flat of course and mainly acres of orange groves....
More soon from
The Relaxed Campers.....

  1. Hi Guys
Happy Easter! Good to see you arent flagging in the heat and manfully carrying on! A nice day here today but it looks like its going to be the only nice day of the Easter weekend, hoping for golf tomorrow but reconciled to it being only 9 holes. Anyway, all well and looking forward to putting clocks forward tomorrow and enjoying light evenings. Keep smiling...
